When we stepped into this expansive commercial space in York Region, the potential was undeniable. The building featured exposed ceilings, massive windows with great views, and a wide-open floor plan. However, before any modern renovation could take place, we had to deal with the floor.

Thick layers of stubborn adhesive residue and old carpet glue covered the entire concrete slab. Commercial renovations frequently encounter this problem, and attempting to install new flooring directly on top is a surefire way to go wrong. Our team was brought in for a heavy-duty concrete resurfacing and preparation job to give this office the new beginning it needed.

The Challenge: Removing Stubborn Glue

Removing old flooring adhesive isn’t a job for handheld scrapers, especially in a space of this size. The glue was bonded tightly to the concrete, creating an uneven and sticky surface. Our goal was to strip it all away and reveal the clean, sound concrete slab underneath.

According to industry experts, proper subfloor preparation is the most critical step in any flooring project. Without a clean and level base, any new flooring material, whether it’s polished concrete, epoxy, or carpet, will eventually fail. We knew we had to get this right to ensure a long-lasting result for our client.

Our Solution: Heavy-Duty Concrete Grinding

Handheld scrapers are not suitable for removing old flooring adhesive, especially in a room this size. An uneven and sticky surface was produced by the glue’s strong bond to the concrete. Our objective was to remove everything and expose the sound, clean concrete slab beneath.

This “grind and prep” method does more than just clean the floor. It also helps to level out minor imperfections and opens up the pores of the concrete slab. This creates a perfect profile for new coatings or adhesives to bond securely. By the time we were finished, the sticky mess was gone, replaced by a clean, smooth, and porous concrete canvas ready for the next stage of construction.
